What is Aerial Yoga?

Aerial Yoga was developed in New York in 1991 with the goal of making aerial acrobatics accessible to the masses. This modern type of yoga offers you an exciting mix of Pilates, Yoga, TRX, and Gymnastics. In Aerial Yoga, you perform the various asanas (yoga poses) with the help of a yoga hammock, or "silk", that is attached to the ceiling. The yoga hammock is made of a comfortable, silk-like fabric (hence the name) that wraps easily around your body. The supportive silk and its gentle sway allows you to reach a state of deep relaxation in the quiet moments like Savasana, however, Aerial Yoga can get quite active as well. Thanks to the aerial silk, you get into many different movements that you never imagined before. Easier exercises such as lunges, more challenging ones such as flying cobras, or playful inversions. Since almost all the exercises activate the entire body and you can often choose which muscle parts you want to target more, aerial yoga is a hit especially for people with knee or other joint problems.

What are the advantages of Aerial Yoga?

  • Pressure relief of the spine by gently stretching the intervertebral discs (especially recommended if you sit a lot during the day)
  • Strengthening of the entire body
  • Playful inversions that gently decompress the spine
  • Different perspective when you look at the world upside down
  • Increased self-esteem as you get into poses you only dreamed of
  • Gentle on the joints, particularly suitable for people with knee problems
  • Feel like a child again and perform movements that you haven't been able to enjoy for a long time
  • You can let go wonderfully in the moments of relaxation in a sheltered cocoon
